A certified HVAC technician’s duty is to handle gases on a regular basis including system regassing and repairs. According to EPA, holding this certificate is mandatory.
Having said this, there are 4 types of certifications available. Each of the courses requires a course and an exam to achieve the certification.
1st EPA Certification – Servicing Small Appliances
If a job restricts servicing and repairing of small refrigerant containing systems a technician needs to study for the 1st type.
To emphasize, according to the EPA’s regulatory requirements of the course and exam cover topics of the following:
- The definition of a small appliance containing less than 5 kg of gas
- System evacuation using the appropriate equipment
- Gas recovery techniques for systems
- Safety considerations when handling refrigerants
In order to achieve this HVAC certification, one must pass an approved test.
2nd EPA Certification – Servicing High-Pressure Systems
Regarding the high-pressure systems work, you need to possess the 2nd EPA certificate. This process is usually the same as the rest – you study the course material and then you take the exam.
