Purchase additional mirrors to increase safety
This is something both drivers and carriers should consider. If you have a fleet and they are mostly the same model trucks buy spare parts in bulk. Like tires, mirrors… This way you’ll have extras available just in case. Usually when a truck mirror breaks the support arms are still good, so they don’t take up that much room, making storage easy.
It might be a good idea to have an extra set on the truck, just in case there’s a ball game nearby. Then if something were to happen it won’t be that big of an issue to change out the broken one for a new one. Better to have it and not need it, as they say.
Apply mirror liquids to prevent rain and fog staying on the glass
Mirrors are only as good as they are maintained. By this I mean you must keep them clean and clear. I know this can be a hassle, places like Seattle are known for their foggy and rainy weather, but you really need to keep the mirror clear. Otherwise it will be the same as not having them at all.
There is a variety of products and tricks available to keep them from fogging up. Many of the more seasoned drivers have their own methods. But if you are like most of us you can simply buy something off the shelf or order it online. Most truck stops stock these as well. They are simple to use usually, last a reasonable about of time before you need to reapply it.
Of course now many of the truck mirrors are like bathroom mirrors. They are specifically designed to not fog up, or at least not as bad. So perhaps it would be worth it to price these for your truck as an option.
