If you are transporting hazardous or dangerous chemicals you will be required to have $5 million worth of liability insurance. This applies if your truck weighs less than 10,000 pounds, will be carrying explosives, radioactive materials, toxic gases (weighing more than 3,500 water gallons), or if any of the materials are poisonous (harmful) if inhaled. This applies regardless if you travel internationally, just across state lines, or merely run locally.
The FMCSA requires at least $5 million worth of liability insurance if your truck is over the 10,001 weight limit, hauls hazardous materials in containers larger than 3,500 gallons, and transports any bulk hazards such as explosives or dangerous inhalants. Again it doesn’t matter where the vehicle is travel to, this requirement still applies.
