Truck Driver Health: 50 Tips to Stay Sharp on the Road

18. Truck Driver Health – Don’t Snack On Junk Food

Now I know I just said eat more meals throughout the day, just smaller portions. Maybe you don’t want to do that, perhaps it just isn’t realistic. Besides we all get the munchies, especially while just sitting (whether driving or watching one of your favorite trucker movie perhaps).

Snacking is fine, but you should try to skip the chips and Twinkies and eat fruit and vegetables instead. Fruits, especially apples and oranges help in lowering the cholesterol because they contain soluble fiber which is also found in barley, eggplant, outs… Things like bananas, apples, grapes, oranges, raw carrots sticks, celery and such are both healthy and great way snack.

19. Truck Driver Health – Prepare Your Own Meals, Instead Of Eating Out

Stress is one of the leading causes of overeating. What’s a good way to avoid stress and eat healthy? Simply enough -just prepare your own meals and by doing that you will have more money in your bank account, which can really relives your stress! Sometimes you can makeup something to take on the road with you. But there are numerous meals that can be made easily on the road and can save you a bundle. For example, a store bought sandwich is about $4.99. A loaf of bread cost $2.50 and lunch meat is $3.00 divided by the number of sandwiches you can make. The savings is obvious.

20. Truck Driver Health – It Is Ok To Eat Salads

Sometimes eating heavy foods, like greasy hamburgers can make you groggy and lethargic. Perhaps a better option is something like a fresh salad. I am not talking about the famous 4000-calorie taco from a corner food truck, but a nice chef salad or Caesar salad. They can be filling and not leave you with that blotted sleepy feeling you can get after a fast food burger.

The owner of Newfoundland’s Maritime Moving and Storage- Ray Kirby is a veteran driver. At a truck stop, he can be found near the salad bar.

“I try to eat salads because they give me more energy; heavy foods make me groggy and sleepy,” he says.

Kirby says that truck stops are much better that what they use to be a while ago. They offer healthier foods these days and you should ask for baked option meal instead of fried foods.
