Conclusion
Your health is important, not just for your sake, but for your family and friends as well. After being out on the road I am sure you want to relax. But when you see your spouse and children and friends and even your dog, don’t you want the energy to enjoy their company!?
I am sure you do. No one is saying that being a little tired after driving 5000 miles is wrong. The issue is that if after you rest all you do is sit on the couch and watch truck driving movies or gaming which is even worse than that, then perhaps there is an issue!
Even the Veteran’s Administration (VA) recognizes the importance of maintaining truck driver health. They have a short to the point handout that offers a few helpful tips. But there are numerous other resources available; all you need to do is visit some of the well-known trucker forums and associations or trucker magazines!
If you are the operations manager, the HR person or somewhere in the logistics of a trucking company you should really look into ways to assist your drivers in getting into some healthy habits. Instead of soda and candy, offer juice, water, and fruit while they are waiting on the dispatcher to get things figured out. See if the local gym will offer discounts. You could even post some simple healthy meals in the monthly newsletter.
